Types of Sedation Dentistry

There are a few different types of sedation dentistry that can be used depending on the situation:

Oral Sedation: Oral sedation is another type of sedation dentistry that can be used for patients who experience mild to moderate dental anxiety. Medication is taken by mouth before the appointment, and the patient remains awake during the procedure. However, they may feel drowsy and have little to no memory of the appointment afterwards.

Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is one of the most common types of sedation used in dental practices. It is a safe and effective way to help patients relax during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and takes effect within minutes. The patient remains awake and alert during the procedure, but may feel lightheaded or dizzy.

IV Sedation: IV sedation is a type of sedation dentistry that is used for patients who experience moderate to severe dental anxiety. Medication is administered through an IV, and the patient remains awake during the procedure. However, they may not remember much of the appointment afterwards.

Sleep Dentistry: For some patients with severe anxiety or complicated procedures, the best option is to be asleep during their dental treatment. For your safety and comfort, general anesthesia is always administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Just relax and wake up with your treatment completed.

Why Is Sedation Dentistry Important?

Sedation dentistry is important because it can help people who experience dental anxiety get the dental care they need in a comfortable and relaxed environment. It also allows dental professionals to complete procedures that may be more difficult to do on patients who are anxious or have a low pain tolerance.

What Are the Side Effects of Sedation Dentistry?

There are a few different potential side effects of sedation dentistry. These side effects are typically mild and go away once the sedation wears off. However, if you experience any severe side effects including the following, please let the office know:

Drowsiness

Lightheadedness

Nausea

Vomiting

Dizziness

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

Aimee P.

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."

Brett E.

"Dr. Laviola explained everything down to the last detail ..Soon after I was getting prepared for a life-changing event with dental implants. The surgery was so simple ..If you follow all instructions on medications there is little to no pain. The dental surgeon is amazing ..Everything from start to finish was done with perfection."
