Signs That a Root Canal Is Needed

Signs of an infected root canal are often tied to sensitivity and painful symptoms. Since the nerve is located inside the tooth, these symptoms usually arise when the nerve is damaged or infected. Pain is the most common symptom associated with a root canal. The pain may be sharp and sudden or it may be a dull ache that gets worse over time. Other signs that a root canal might be needed include:

Severe toothache pain that radiates to the jaw, neck, or ear

Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures

Swelling and tenderness around the gums

Darkening of the tooth

Inability to bite down

What Are the Benefits of a Root Canal?

A root canal can treat tooth decay before it gets out of control. The benefits of root canal treatment include saving the tooth, preventing infection, and relieving pain. Patients will feel relief from the pain associated with tooth decay once the root canal treatment is complete. In addition, root canal treatment can help prevent any further damage to the tooth.

What Happens During Root Canal Treatment?

During root canal treatment, the dentist or endodontist will remove the diseased pulp from inside the tooth. A sedative is used to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure. A drill is used to create an opening in the tooth so the dentist can access the pulp. Once the pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed with an antibacterial substance. A crown is placed on the tooth to protect it from further damage.

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."

Brett E.

"Dr. Laviola explained everything down to the last detail ..Soon after I was getting prepared for a life-changing event with dental implants. The surgery was so simple ..If you follow all instructions on medications there is little to no pain. The dental surgeon is amazing ..Everything from start to finish was done with perfection."
