What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are caps that cover the entire surface of a tooth. They can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, ceramic, or metal. Dental crowns are custom-crafted to fit over an existing tooth. Dental crowns are often used in conjunction with other restorative dentistry measures, such as bridges or implants, in order to give patients the smile they desire.

Signs You May Need a Dental Crown

There are a number of signs that you may need a dental crown, including:

A tooth that has been damaged by decay or injury

A tooth that is misshapen or discolored

A tooth that is too weak to support a dental filling

A tooth that needs to be covered after a root canal procedure

A tooth that is being used to support a dental bridge

A tooth that is being used to cover a dental implant

Are Dental Crowns Painful?

Dental crowns are not usually painful. However, the process of preparing the tooth for the crown can be uncomfortable for some patients. To prepare the tooth, the dentist will numb the area with local anesthesia. Once the area is numb, the existing tooth will be trimmed down to make room for the crown. This part of the procedure can cause some discomfort. However, the local anesthesia will help to minimize any pain.

"I’ve been going to Dental Masters of Alexandria for years and a patient of Dr. Laviola since he started practicing here. He’s very personable, knowledgeable, takes time to explain procedures (I’ve had quite a few!) and is just an amazing dentist. The entire staff is wonderful, always helpful and friendly. Highly recommend!"

Aimee P.

"I have been a patient of Dr. Laviola's for several years now, and this is the best dental practice I have ever been to. Dr. Laviola and the whole team takes extraordinary care to make sure you are always comfortable throughout any cleaning and procedure, both major and minor (I have had both). The entire support team is also great."

Brett E.

"Dr. Laviola explained everything down to the last detail ..Soon after I was getting prepared for a life-changing event with dental implants. The surgery was so simple ..If you follow all instructions on medications there is little to no pain. The dental surgeon is amazing ..Everything from start to finish was done with perfection."
